Message: "I want to share my furnace experience with y'all... Waking up to a chilly house is not that big a deal for me. I prefer it to living in a sauna. I don't set the thermostat to any more than 60 degrees normally. (So, if you're coming to visit, wear a sweater). Not having hot water was the bigger issue. I didn't panic when I pushed the re-set button and nothing happened. I went upstairs, had half a cup of coffee to get my head together and picked up the phone. At 8 am I called A. Maurais & Son--the folks who installed the furnace nearly 50 years ago. Left a message and 15 minutes later I got a call back. There were a couple of people ahead of me but as soon as those jobs were completed he'd be at my house. At 10:06 he arrived--Phil, the son of the late Mr. Maurais himself--pleasant and genial. He got right to work and 40 minutes later I had a working furnace--heat & hot water. It sounds like a Rolls-Royce engine down there now. What could--and would--have been a stressful situation was actually a pleasant interlude. I have no idea what it's going to cost but I'm pretty sure it will be worth it for not having an emotional breakdown. These are the same people who installed the new toilet in the main bathroom last month--just before I had out-of-town family arriving. It was done professionally, in hardly any time AND $150. 00 below the quote I got from a competitor. That quote came 3 days AFTER the job was already completed.
